Monitor sightings on the game drives & walks
Please note not all conservation activities are organized year round and subject to availability or researchers and conservationists, contact us about the possibilities.
With this game drive and safari walk in Luambe National Park, you will not only get an up-close experience with the animals that live in the park! But also help the conservation of these animals by recording your sightings. Guides take guests on walks and drives daily, sharing their wealth of knowledge about the local wildlife. You're sure to see some amazing sights during your time here. The large mammal sightings that our guests record during their drives and walks are very important to us. We use this data to confirm that the populations of these animals are continuing to recover. We add the sightings to our seasonal sighting record map, which is displayed in the Luambe camp lounge and often leads to interesting discussions among our guests. As you take in the beauty of the animals, make sure to pay attention for any rarer ones. If you see something worth noting, remember to write it down in the sighting log. Your data will help us immensely with our never-ending conservation work.
Want to get more involved ?
If guests are interested, we invite them to take close-up pictures of lions and leopards for our mammal census. Each individual is identifiable from the unique whisker spots found on each side of the face. Other identifying factors such as ear tears, facial shapes and scars are also useful. The African wild dogs’ coat patterns are similarly unique to each individual and can be used for identification purposes. We would most appreciate side view pictures of wild dogs in Luambe so that we may update our data on the local wild dog pack.

Watch Hippos during sunset
In front of camp, on the banks of the Luangwa a large pool is home to hundreds of hippo whose numbers increase throughout the dry season. There is a new Hippo Hide from where you can observe the hippos in their natural habitat.
Especially during sunset the Hippos in the pool are a magnificent sight.
Expect to fall asleep to the hippos grunts, groans, growls, wheezing and chuffing noises as they leave the river to graze.

Observing the leopards of Luambe National Park

Luambe’s giraffes:
Gentle giants on the increase:
Giraffes are increasingly becoming a species of conservation concern. A small population has established in Luambe area and began to breed. In 2020 , a pair of twins arrived! Apart from South Luangwa National Park, Luambe is the only protected area with a reproducing population of Thornicroft’s giraffe. Their coat pattern shows a high degree of individual variation and can be used as a cost‐effective, non‐invasive way to study populations. Help the team with your pictures of giraffes to increase the giraffe data base.

Understand the community dynamics

Carmine conservation and coffee
For a few weeks a year, from late September to the end of October the area is splashed with colour by Luangwa’s favourite visitors – the carmine bee eaters. Large flocks of these migratory birds dig their burrows and lay their eggs in the vertical Luangwa riverbanks, offering guests the rare opportunity to savour a cup of ‘Carmine Coffee’ during their breeding season. Truly a sight to behold even if you are not an avid bird watcher. These birds are often the target of feather poachers. Regular monitoring of Luambe´s breeding colonies, keeping accurate nest and population counts is vital to know that they are being protected. Luambe Conservation Project records nest sites and numbers annually to ensure the populations are thriving.

See law-enforcement at work
In 2019, the Department of National Parks and Wildlife of Zambia increased the number of scouts in Luambe National Park. Scout training programme of the International Fund for Animal Welfare has also taken place in and around Luambe National Park in 2019 and 2020. Join the scouts on an educational anti-snaring patrol and learn about the signs of incursions, tracks and poachers.

Luambe has various communities that border the park and work closely with Chitungulu. Guests are welcome to join us in understanding the challenges these communities face when living next to wildlife areas. Do visit elephant proof maize storage, assist with bee hive fencing and chilli planting which help reduce human – wildlife conflict. Luambe supports a lot of work in the education sector focusing on protecting wildlife for the next generation. Basketry and wood carvings through the Chitungulu Foundation.

Sleep on the banks of the Luangwa river
Because Luambe Camp is the only camp within Luambe National Park, we can offer our guests exclusive sleepouts and bush dining experiences that other camps in busier parts of the Luangwa cannot provide. After a filling meal, explore the Luangwa safely at night with our trustworthy guides and armed scouts. Falling asleep outside under the stars is an incomparable experience, particularly when surrounded by natural sounds on the banks of Zambia's Luangwa River.
Arranging these activities with luambe camp management is a real highlight of visiting Luambe!
