FINE DINING – DINNER ON THE TRAIN (LIVINGSTONE, VICTORIA FALLS)

Experience this elegant ride, a combination of vintage luxury with a modern fine dining experience to recreate moments of bygone romance. The train comprises five carriages; Two Dinning Cars, a Kitchen Car, Lounge Car and an Observation Car with Steam Locomotives 10th Class 156 and 12th class 204 built by Northern British Locomotive works in the 1930’s. Loco 156 was renovated by the famous Wildlife Artist David Sheppard and in 1971 donated to Zambia National Heritage.

The Beautiful Wembley Dinning Car was built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and went on display in London at the British Empire Exhibition in 1924. It was shipped to the Union and entered service on 19th May 1926. In honour of its exhibition duties it was renamed the Wembley.

Pick up and drop off location: Pick up from the Accommodation within Livingstone Town
Pick up time: 4:00pm – 4:30pm
Dress Code: Smart casual, no shorts
Smoking: Smoking is permitted on the outside balcony of the Observation Car. Smoking is not permitted in any of the carriages.
Dietary: Special dietary requirements to be communicated in advance.
What to bring: Camera, train ticket, passport (for bridge route), warm jacket in winter
Children pay full rate (not advisable for children under 12)

Dining

Route 1. The Victoria Falls Bridge Run:
Travel on the “Cape to Cairo” mainline onto the The Victoria Falls Bridge. Once on the mainline the train leaves the outskirts of Livingstone and travels into The Victoria Falls World Heritage Site. Spot some wildlife en route to the border post.
The train will stop on the bridge for approximately 20 minutes and guests will have a chance to disembark from the train at this point.
A five course set dinner will be served at the Palm Grove siding before heading back.
This service runs every Wednesday and Saturday

Route 2. The Mulobezi Line Run:
Route: Set off through Dambwa Township and on up the Mulobezi Line. Enjoy the sunset while travelling through the Mosi-Oa-Tunya Game Park (wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed).The locomotive ‘runs around’ at Sinde Siding, the train pushes further on from Sinde Siding to stop for a five course set dinner, with dessert being served on the return journey to Livingstone.
Excursion Includes: A welcome drink on arrival at the Siding, pre-dinner drinks, A set, five course dinner provided by Royal Livingstone Restaurant and Chefs, Wines, beers and soft drinks, Photo opportunity in front of the train, Return transfers from hotels within Livingstone. There is a cash bar if guests wish to purchase spirits

Relive the romance of a bygone era on an expedition to one of the natural wonders of the world. Travel north through Modimolle, thought by early pioneers to be the source of the Nile. Cross the Tropic of Capricorn into baobab country and Bulawayo, capital of Matabeleland and industrial capital of Zimbabwe. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served as the train travels towards Bulawayo via West Nicholson. Overnight stop on board at Mpopoma.

07h00-Breakfast is Served departing Mpopoma
13h00-Lunch while travelling along the eastern edge of Hwange Park.
15h00-Arrive at Kennedy Siding for a game drive at The Hide.
19h30-Dinner is served en route to Thompsons Junction.

DAY 4

CAPE TOWN to DAR ES SALAAM or reverse: 15 DAYS - 5800km

This epic expedition is one of the most famous train journeys in the world. From Cape Town, traverse the Karoo with visits to the historic village of Matjiesfontein, Kimberley’s Diamond Mine Museum and the extraordinary Big Hole.

Tour the capital city of Pretoria and enjoy the Big Five at Madikwe. Explore one of the natural wonders of the world, the Victoria Falls, before crossing the mighty Zambezi into Zambia for a bush walk at Chisimba Falls. Descend into the Rift Valley and witness spectacular scenery. Pass the Selous – the largest reserve on the continent and a vision of timeless Africa – shortly before the arrival in Dar es Salaam.

A pioneering trans-African adventure uniting the Atlantic and Indian Oceans – the first time in history a passenger train will travel the famous east-to-west copper trail. Set off from Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) with a game visit in the Selous, a fly-in two-night safari in South Luangwa (Zambia) and a tour of Lubumbashi (DRC). Join the Benguela line for short walking tours detailing Angola’s recent history with journey’s end in Lobito.

LUSAKA – LIVINGSTONE (VICTORIA FALLS) or Reverse ZAMBEZI TRAIN The new Zambezi train is a state of the art train which currently is running between Kitwe and Livingstone. The train runs twice weekly with the following facilities on board – Business class, Standard, economy coaches, Sleeper compartments, Snack coach(restaurant), Air-conditioned coaches, Flushable toilets, Television sets and music system

KAPIRI MPOSHI (ZAMBIA)– DAR ES SALAAM (TANZANIA) or Reverse

EXPRESS TRAINS

The Mukuba Express Train operates every Tuesday from New Kapiri Mposhi to Dar es Salaam and every Friday from Dar es Salaam to New Kapiri-Mposhi, departing from Kapiri-Mposhi and Dar es Salaam at 16:00 CAT and 15:50 EAT, respectively.

The Mukuba is named after Zambia’s top mineral export, copper, for which the country remains one of the top producers in the world. It takes approximately 46 hours to travel between Dar es Salaam and New Kapiri Mposhi.

Passengers have the rare treat of viewing a variety of game along the way. When passing though the tunnels, crossing rivers and gorges, passengers have a chance to appreciate the awesome and inspirational engineering works of the Chinese, who constructed the rail line between 1970 and 1975.

ORDINARY TRAINS

The Ordinary Passenger Train, on the other hand, runs in the opposite direction of the Express every Tuesday and Friday, departing Dar es Salaam and New Kapiri-Mposhi at 13:50 EAT and 14:00 CAT, on Tuesday and Friday, respectively. The ordinary train stops at every serviceable railway station in the respective regions of Tanzania and Zambia.
