Rovos Rail Trail of Two Oceans - Dar es Salaam to Lobito or reverse (15 Days, 4300km)

A pioneering trans-African adventure uniting the Atlantic and Indian Oceans – the first time in history a passenger train will travel the famous east-to-west copper trail.

Set off from Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) with a game visit in the Selous, a fly-in two-night safari in South Luangwa (Zambia) and a tour of Lubumbashi (DRC). 

Join the Benguela line for short walking tours detailing Angola’s recent history with journey’s end in Lobito.

Dinner on a Train Livingstone, Victoria Falls

Experience this elegant ride, a combination of vintage luxury with a modern fine dining experience to recreate moments of bygone romance. The train comprises five carriages; Two dining cars, a kitchen car, lounge car and an observation car with steam locomotives 10th Class 156 and 12th class 204 built by Northern British Locomotive works in the 1930’s. Loco 156 was renovated by the famous Wildlife Artist David Shepherd and in 1971 donated to Zambia National Heritage.

The Beautiful Wembley Dinning Car was built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and went on display in London at the British Empire Exhibition in 1924. It was shipped to the Union and entered service on 19th May 1926. In honour of its exhibition duties it was renamed the Wembley.

General information:


  • Pick up and drop off location: Pick up from the accommodation within Livingstone Town

  • Pick up time: 4:00pm – 4:30pm

  • Dress Code: Smart casual, no shorts

  • Smoking: Smoking is permitted on the outside balcony of the Observation Car. Smoking is not permitted in any of the carriages.

  • Dietary: Special dietary requirements to be communicated in advance.

  • What to bring: Camera, train ticket, passport (for bridge route), warm jacket in winter

  • Children pay full rate (not advisable for children under 12)


Route 1: The Victoria Falls Bridge Run

Travel on the “Cape to Cairo” mainline onto the The Victoria Falls Bridge. Once on the mainline the train leaves the outskirts of Livingstone and travels into The Victoria Falls World Heritage Site.


Spot some wildlife en route to the border post. The train will stop on the bridge for approximately 20 minutes and guests will have a chance to disembark from the train at this point.

A five course set dinner will be served at the Palm Grove siding before heading back.


This service runs twice weekly.

Route 2: The Mulobezi Line Run

Set off through Dambwa Township and on up the Mulobezi Line. Enjoy the sunset while travelling through the Mosi-Oa-Tunya Game Park (wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed).T


The locomotive ‘runs around’ at Sinde Siding, the train pushes further on from Sinde Siding to stop for a five course set dinner, with dessert being served on the return journey to Livingstone.

Excursion Includes: A welcome drink on arrival at the Siding, pre-dinner drinks, a set, five course dinner provided by Royal Livingstone Restaurant and Chefs, Wines, beers and soft drinks, photo opportunity in front of the train, return transfers from hotels within Livingstone.

Zambezi Train: Lusaka to Livingstone (Victoria Falls) Or Reverse

The Zambezi train introduced in 2004 currently runs between Kitwe in the north of Zambia via Lusaka to Livingstone.

You can stay in your own sleeper compartment with a bunk bed


The train runs twice weekly with the following facilities on board – ,snack coach (restaurant), Air-conditioned Coaches, Flushable toilets, Television sets and music system.

Mukuba Express Train
Kapiri (Zambia) to Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) Or Reverse

Express Trains

The Mukuba Express Train operates every Tuesday from New Kapiri Mposhi to Dar es Salaam and every Friday from Dar es Salaam to New Kapiri-Mposhi, departing from Kapiri-Mposhi and Dar es Salaam at 16:00 CAT and 15:50 EAT, respectively.  It takes approximately 46 hours to travel between Dar es Salaam and New Kapiri Mposhi.

Ordinary Trains

The Ordinary Passenger Train, runs in the opposite direction of the Express every Tuesday and Friday, departing Dar es Salaam and New Kapiri-Mposhi at 13:50 EAT and 14:00 CAT, on Tuesday and Friday, respectively.


The ordinary train stops at every serviceable railway station in the respective regions of Tanzania and Zambia.
