ZAMBEZI WORKING DONKEY PROJECT

The Zambezi Working Donkey Project (ZWDP) is dedicated to enhancing the welfare of working donkeys in Zambia. Recognizing the essential role these animals play in agriculture and transportation, ZWDP focuses on rescue, rehabilitation, and education to ensure donkeys receive the care they deserve.

Mission and Activities

ZWDP's mission centers on alleviating the suffering of working donkeys by:

  • Rescue and Rehabilitation: Providing veterinary care and a sanctuary for donkeys in need, offering them a chance to recover and, when possible, reintegrate into their communities.
  • Education and Training: Conducting workshops to teach donkey owners about proper care, humane harnessing techniques, and cart modifications. This empowers owners with the knowledge to improve their animals' well-being and work efficiency.
  • Community Engagement: Collaborating with local communities to raise awareness about donkey welfare, emphasizing the animals' vital contributions to daily life and the economy.

Visitor Engagement

Visitors have the opportunity to engage with ZWDP through

  • Educational Tours: Guided visits to the rehabilitation center offer insights into the challenges faced by working donkeys and the measures taken to address them.
  • Volunteering Opportunities: Hands-on involvement in daily operations, including feeding, care, and community outreach programs, allows volunteers to make a tangible impact.

Cultural Significance

In many Zambian communities, donkeys are indispensable, serving as primary means of transport and labor, especially in rural areas. They enable families to carry goods, plow fields, and access markets, directly influencing economic stability and development. ZWDP's efforts not only enhance animal welfare but also support the livelihoods of local populations by ensuring these essential animals remain healthy and productive.

By visiting or supporting the Zambezi Working Donkey Project, individuals contribute to a compassionate initiative that uplifts both the donkeys and the communities that rely on them. Book your visit when you are booking your safari with us info@ntandaventures.com

CONSERVATION AND TOURISM (CATS) – HUMAN WILDLIFE CONFLICT - LIVING WITH ELEPHANTS NIGHT TOUR

The Conservation and Tourism Society (CATS) is a dedicated non-profit organization based in Livingstone, Zambia, committed to bridging the gap between local communities and wildlife to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts. As human settlements expand into traditional wildlife habitats, encounters between residents and animals like elephants have become increasingly common, often leading to property damage and safety concerns.

To address these challenges, CATS offers the "Living with Elephants" night tour, an immersive experience designed to educate participants about coexistence strategies and conservation efforts. The tour includes guided birding and wildlife observation around Livingstone's lagoons, providing insights into the region's biodiversity. As the sun sets, guests enjoy sundowners while learning about the causes and implications of human-wildlife conflict in the area. The evening features performances by the "Dambwa Warriors" youth group, who share their experiences with elephants through song and dance, followed by a traditional meal with local homeowners who recount their personal stories around the fire. Additionally, a traditional healer discusses the use of herbs and medicines, highlighting the cultural significance of local flora and fauna.

This tour not only offers participants a deeper understanding of elephant behavior and the challenges of coexistence but also emphasizes the importance of community involvement in conservation initiatives. By engaging with local traditions and knowledge, visitors gain a holistic perspective on the efforts required to foster harmonious relationships between humans and wildlife.

LUNAR RAINBOW / MOONBOW

At full moon the Victoria Falls gates  re-open in the evening for special tours to witness the magic of the lunar rainbow -weather and spray permitting!

Victoria Falls is one of the few places on earth where this natural phenomenon occurs and where it can be witnessed with ease. Yet many people visit here without knowing of this natural phenomenon, but it is one of the most impressive sights of Victoria Falls.

A lunar rainbow, also known as a moonbow, is expected to grace the skies over Victoria Falls in Zambia

The high rising cloud of spray can also block out the moonlight, depending on the wind direction. No spray from the falls means no lunar rainbow, so in the dry season months of September, October, November and early December, it is only possible to see the moonbow from certain viewpoints but not all.

Though moonbows can occur in several places, Cumberland Falls is one of only two locations in the world where they consistently appear (the second being Victoria Falls on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia), thanks to its precise geographical location.

A moonbow (sometimes known as a lunar rainbow) is an optical phenomenon caused when the light from the moon is refracted through water droplets in the air. The amount of light available even from the brightest full moon is far less than that produced by the sun so moonbows are incredibly faint and very rarely seen.

The best time to see moonbows is during the Full moon between February and August.

Lunar rainbows are most easily viewed when the Moon is at or nearest to its brightest phase full moon.
